When faced with a threat, our bodies release a cascade of hormones, including oxytocin. This "bonding hormone" plays a crucial role in social bonding, trust, and empathy. This hormone counteracts the fight-or-flight instinct and instead encourages us to “tend and befriend.” When released, we ensured our species’ survival by seeking social support, protecting our offspring and forming alliances with larger social groups. This release of oxytocin can also help counteract stress by lowering cortisol levels, which is released naturally during stressful situations. Oxytocin, along with all the other powerful brain chemicals (beta-endorphins, endocannabinoids, dopamine, serotonin, glutamate and GABA) released during high intensity interval training, make group based workouts an exceptionally effective way to improve physical health while also enhancing mood, reducing stress, and strengthening social bonds
